Quartzian
Skull sculpture carved from a block of dense, luminous quartzfrom the Decazeville basin. The mineral features white tones nuanced with natural sienna earth tones, as well as crystalline veins left unpolished. The surface retains a rough and irregular appearance, reinforcing the impression of an ancient object extracted from rock.
The sculpture adopts a narrow, elongated form that departs from classical anatomical realism. The skull appears partially detached from the mineral, as if it had emerged from the mass without being completely separated from it. This choice of treatment gives the piece an appearance close to fossilization, somewhere between a relic and an apparition.
The sculptural work respects the natural structure of quartz. The volumes are deliberately understated, almost archaeological, allowing the mineral nature of quartz to impose its contrasts, fractures, and density.
With Le Quartzien, the sculpture plays on the boundary between human form and geological material. The skull is represented as an ancient form, preserved in rock, offering a reading that is both symbolic and mineral, without any added effect.
This sculpture is made from a natural mineral whose physical properties influence the sculptor's technique, as explained on the Studio page.
