Kraken
Sculpture representing an octopus, carved from a 10 kg agate stone, with naturally nuanced red and orange tones. The stone has a soft translucency, revealed by precise sanding and polishing, which allows light to pass through and highlights the depth of the mineral.
The sculpture adopts realistic dimensions. The body is constructed around a balanced central volume, dominated by two large eyes, characteristic of the octopus, which immediately structure the reading of the piece. The tentacles spread out around the body with particular attention paid to movement, curves, and the continuity of forms. Each tentacle is finely crafted, with suction cups sculpted one by one and seamlessly integrated into the material.
The sculptural work creates a dialogue between the density of the agate and the suggested suppleness of the animal. The natural variations in the stone accompany the volumes, reinforcing the impression of depth and presence. The piece deliberately retains the strength of the mineral, without seeking to smooth or standardize its contrasts.
A figure of the deep, the octopus is often associated withadaptability, creative intelligence, and multiple perceptions, driven by its three hearts and nine brains. In Kraken, this symbolic dimension is embodied in the material itself, through a sculpture that combines the power of the animal with that of stone in a unique work.
This sculpture is made from a natural mineral whose physical properties influence the sculptor's technique, as explained on the Studio page.
