The Cavernous One
Skull sculpture made from clear agate from the Dourbie Valley, close to flesh color. The skull looks like an ancient fragment, as if it had been discovered buried or preserved underground.
The sculpture is deliberately very realistic. The skull is hollowed out, with no lower jaw and missing teeth, reinforcing the impression of an ancient relic rather than an idealized representation. The volumes are precise, measured, without exaggeration, and the overall shape evokes a skull marked by time.
The gaze is direct and striking, giving the skull an immediate, frank, unambiguous presence and creating an intense face-to-face encounter with the observer.
The mineral has been gently polished, without excessive shine. The surface is not mirror-like: it retains a subtle matt finish, as if time and erosion had gradually shaped the material. The natural shades of agate accompany this archaeological interpretation, where the sculpture seems to convey an ancient history.
With Le Caverneux, the skull becomes an inherited presence, inscribed in a continuity between mineral, memory, and ancestral figure.
This sculpture is made from a natural mineral whose physical properties influence the sculptor's technique, as explained on the Studio page.
